Bloody hell! I just saw the date of my last blog. Ummmmmm ......sorry about that!
Let's try again :) You know it's probably because blogging feels clunky to me. Like I'm putting up some kinda shopfront and you're all buying it. Shopfronts just aren't who I am. I learnt that years ago now.
Particularly since turning 40 a few years ago I've realised that I actually quite like myself just the way I am. And funnily enough ....other people seem to like me better too LOL. So, with that in mind, I've just decided to share me. My stuff. When I like sharing. If you like it, stick around. If you don't ....then don't look. I swear like a sailor. I love my family fiercely. I love adventure. I love gardening. I love chooks. I love knitting and spinning and crafting. I love building shit. I'm new to beekeeping but have fallen head over heels for these little beasties. I'm a bit of food nazi ....but I can be naughty too (it's all in the balance ...wine anyone?). I've evolved into the Naturopath that I've always wanted to be and work with some truly amazing and inspiring colleagues ( you guys know who you are).
So here we go ....first share.
I'm working on creating my own little Urban Homestead or farm. I have 9 chickens (there's a story coming there), I have 2 bee hives, I have fruit trees of all sorts, I have both culinary and medicinal herbs and I have vege gardens ....and I have such a looooooong way to go. My backyard is a crazy mess of weeds, dog and chicken shit and there's gardening stuff lying around EVERYWHERE!
We recently had a neighbour complain about our rooster crowing so we decided in the interests of having a respectful relationship with our neighbours, we would move Mr Basil along. I swapped him out for a new young hen of the same breed (Belgian D'uccles), in a different colour. So my new friend Carole came out to collect Mr Basil and bring the new baby, Jasmine Butterfly (blame my 4yo for the name LOL) and she came across the most embarassing part of my entire yard. It's quite honestly hip high in weeds. You know that little space at the back and down the side of your house ...where nothing grows ....except the weeds. That spot. I NEVER let people down there. I nearly died when she followed me around.
Anyway, Carole says in an offhand kinda way, "You should let the chickens run over that. They'll take care of it in no time." Picture a thought bubble coming off my head .....Why the hell didn't I think of that?? What a bloody wasted resource!! Here I am trying to create some loose permaculture in my yard and I've missed a major bloody resource that's been the bane of our existence at this house. We don't spray pesticides so we were pulling them all by hand every 6 or so months. Mainly when you could see them talking to you at head high through the window!
With chickens free-ranging over the upper yard for the last 2+ years ....anything outside the vege and apple beds is looking pretty barren. Perfect solution!! Implemented today!
